Animal Imports

The main requirements for the importation of live animals and animal products is generally based on an initial import risk analysis for that particular animal/ animal product. These requirements may include such things as sourcing from countries or zones within a country free of that particular disease of concern, the testing and certification of freedom from disease, or a course of vaccinations, prior to export. The biosecurity service generally has the responsibility of checking the documentation, together with the arrangement of detention of live animals in isolated animal quarantine facilities, if these are available.

Diagnosis of symptoms of diseases that may be suspected at the point of entry is the responsibility of veterinarians or paravets within the ministry/department and should be in accordance with the standards set by OIE (Office International des Epizooties/World Organisation for Animal Health). OIE has developed minimum import standards for specific diseases. Standards for the transportation of animals and their disposal have also been developed.
