Destruction by Incineration

Incineration is normally conducted for quarantine purposes with gas or oil-fired incinerators. It is important that the capacity of the incinerator to deal with a particular weight of wet goods at a particular temperature is known, as to exceed this rate of delivery may mean that the pests will not be destroyed.

STEP PROCEDURE FOR INCINERATION
1 Determine the weight of material to be incinerated, and whether it is combustible or wet.
2 Determine how long it will take to incinerate the consignment.
3 Ensure that the incinerator has sufficient fuel to complete the task.
4 Light the incinerator and wait the required time for it to reach operating temperature.
5 Feed in the goods at the acceptable rate, ensuring that before any is added the majority of the previous load has been burnt.
6 When finished, turn off the burner.
7 Allow the ash and non-combustible material to cool.
8 Clean out the incinerator and dispose of the ash by burial or in a rubbish tip.
Undertake regular maintenance of the incinerator. In particular, ensure that liquid fuels are filtered and the jets to the burners are cleaned regularly. Replace the burner jets as recommended by the manufacturer.
